Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 1969  by Dr E Svendsen and registered as a charity in 1973. Since then, over 9,000 donkeys have been taken into care  as a result of cruelty, neglect or their owners being no longer able to care for them. The majority are cared for in our eight farms until the end of their lives or, if found suitable, are sent in pairs to carefully selected foster homes where they benefit from individual attention.

A team of 55 Welfare Officers covers all areas of The United Kingdom following up reports of neglect and providing advice on welfare. The welfare of beach donkeys is monitored regularly and the Donkey Sanctuary works closely with Local Authorities and Beach Donkey Operators to improve conditions on the beaches and at their places of rest.

We attend horse sales and fairs to supervise the welfare of donkeys being sold, working closely with DEFRA, Trading Standards and the auctioneers to improve the welfare of donkeys at these sales.

The Donkey sanctuary is involved in the lobbying for better animal welfare legislation and contributes to the formulation of new legislation and codes of practice.

Courses and lectures are provided throughout the country to donkey owners as well as Animal Health Inspectors, vets, Licensing Officers, farriers and others to raise awareness and enhance their knowledge of donkeys.

There is a fully equipped hospital and laboratory staffed by a team of full time vets and nurses to deal with residential cases, referrals and analysis work.

The Donkey Sanctuary is actively involved in many countries overseas such as India, Kenya, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain, to name but a few.

We have a sister charity called The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust For Children And Donkeys which provides riding facilities for children with special needs and abilities out of our five centres spread throughout the country.
