Dogs Trust

Dogs Trust (formerly National Canine Defence League)

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity. Through its network of 15 Rehoming Centres across the UK, the charity cares for over 12,500 stray and abandoned dogs each year.

While a dog is in the care of Dogs Trust it will receive the very best of care and attention, but Dogs Trust works tirelessly to ensure that each and every dog goes to a happy and loving home of its own. Through a careful homechecking system, staff also ensure that a dog and his new owners are the perfect match.

As suggested by its famous slogan, “A Dog is for Life, Not Just for Christmas”, Dogs Trust is dedicated to promoting the message of responsible dog ownership. One of its biggest challenges is tackling the stray dog problem – there are over 100,000 stray dogs every year in the UK, and many thousands of these are put to sleep simply because a home cannot be found.

The charity invests heavily in a campaign to tackle the problem at source, and through its Rehoming, Neutering and Microchipping scheme is making real progress.  The charity also runs an Education Programme which provides free schools materials for the dog owners of tomorrow.

Dogs Trust also provides information and factsheets on all aspects of caring for and living with dogs, from how to look after a puppy to what to do if you’re a working dog owner.

Dogs Trust has a non-destruction policy, and will never put a healthy dog to sleep. The charity is working towards the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction.
